Detailed Review | Dell G15 5515 Ryzen Edition | Dell XPS 17 9710 11th Gen Intel |
Design
The Dell G15 Ryzen Edition may be affordable, but it’s still one of the boldest gaming laptops you can buy. A light shade dominates that Dell calls Phantom Grey and is finished with a darker mottled pattern. Elsewhere, the hinge and back are thick and dark, and there are orange G logos on the palm rest and in the corner.
- A beautiful and durable design helps Dell stand out from the competition.
- The keyboard is fast and responsive, so it’s perfect for gaming.
- However, Dell is larger than the competition, and its trackpad and screen are disappointing.
The Dell machine may look good, but it’s not thin or light. It weighs 2.44kg, and its body is 26.9mm thick, while the massive back means it is 273mm deep.
Dell XPS 17 9710- This XPS 17 is one of a kind for the simple reason that it is the only one to offer a UHD+ screen in 16:10 format with such a significant form factor. We will have the opportunity to return to this screen. Still, we can already say that its integration is remarkably successful, with very thin borders all around the screen, including the lower border.
Design and aesthetics are turned towards the top of the range here; we find an aluminum chassis that benefits from an excellent level of finishes, as well as a carbon fiber coating that looks very good around the keyboard and the touchpad.
Display
Dell G15 5515- The 15.6-inch display on the Dell G15 Ryzen Edition has a 1920 x 1080, which is perfect for gaming on this GPU, but its refresh rate is only 120Hz. This is acceptable for mainstream gaming, but MSI and Lenovo laptops are clocked at 144Hz and 165Hz, respectively. You’ll get faster, smoother gaming on both panels, and those speeds are better for esports.
- Impressive contrast and black levels mean you get more depth
- It doesn’t display a wide range of colors, so more colorful games suffer
- The 120Hz refresh rate is mediocre but suitable for everyday gaming.
Dell XPS 17 9710- Dell once again trusts Sharp for the screen of its XPS 17. It is an IPS panel (reference: SHP1517) touchscreen, with a glossy coating, with a refresh rate limited to 60 Hz. of course finds a delightful 16:10 format to work with, with a definition of 3840×2400 pixels. Therefore, the working environment is quite large, even with a scaling of 200 or 250%.
This IPS panel stands out for its brightness and contrast ratio. A peak light of 513 cd/m² displays excellent contrast for an IPS panel, with a balance of 1747:1. It can go down to a minimum brightness of 25.9 cd/m², but in this case, the contrast ratio approaches more than 1000:1.
Performance
Dell G15 5515- The RTX 3060 Dell G15 Ryzen Edition runs at 125W, one of the best TDPs available for this GPU. Elsewhere it has the standard 6GB of memory and 3840 stream processors. The AMD Ryzen 7 5800H processor isn’t bad either, with a great Zen 3 architecture, eight cores, and theoretical frequencies of 3.2GHz and 4.4GHz.
- Provides stable speed in 1080p games and good application speed
- It’s never particularly loud, and it’s never too hot outside.
- Throttling means competitors offer more processing speed.
This processor will still handle photo editing, basic video tasks, multitasking, and lots of browser tabs without issue. Still, the new Intel part is better for everyday workloads, and the AMD chip is faster elsewhere.
Dell XPS 17 9710- We have already seen this processor in action recently, notably within the Alienware X15 R1. It has 8 cores and 16 threads, a thermal envelope of 45 W, and frequencies between 2.3 and 4.6 GHz. On the other hand, its PL1 and PL2 are adjusted to a logically lower level than on configurations better equipped in cooling, respectively, at 70 W and 109 W.
Dell is continuing with Micron to equip its laptops with NVMe SSDs. With 1 TB of storage, our copy shows good overall performance, even if we have already seen better. The speeds are correct, with 3.2 GB/s in sequential read and 2.8 GB/s in sequential write.
Conclusion!
Dell G15 5515- The Dell looks excellent, is well priced, and is durable while also offering strong performance, a comfortable keyboard, and excellent battery life. Rivals offer more speed, and Dell’s 120Hz display isn’t impressive. This is also not a very thin and light laptop.
Dell XPS 17 9710- There’s no doubt that Dell has considered the criticisms and worked accordingly to iron out the weak points of its XPS line. Result: the XPS 17 2021 is an ultraportable workstation that is ultra-convincing both on paper and in use.
