How To Disable Dark Mode in Chrome on Windows/Mac/Android/iPhone
Few things are more frustrating than opening a program or app on your computer, phone, or tablet and seeing a splash of brightness in your eyes. It’s not surprising that developers and app makers offer Dark Mode to reduce eye strain when using the device, especially at night.
The Google Chrome on your PC or the Chrome app on your smartphone has a dark mode feature that can reduce the strain on your eyes when browsing.
However, when Chrome goes into dark mode, the characters may be hard to see, and some people may want to turn off dark mode and return to normal light mode.
In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how to turn off / off Chrome’s dark mode. The article’s content assumes Windows / macOS / Android / iOS devices.

DISABLE DARK MODE IN GOOGLE CHROME ON PC
Dark mode on Windows 10/11 or Google Chrome on Mac can be turned off by the following methods. First, let’s start with the basic method of canceling Chrome’s dark mode.
Method 1: Reset Chrome colors and themes to defaults
If Chrome’s tabs or address bar are in dark mode, it’s possible that your colors and themes aren’t the default colors.
To restore Chrome colors and themes to their default colors, follow the steps below.
- Launch Chrome and open a new tab.
- Click “Customize Chrome” at the bottom right.
- Select Colors and Themes in the left pane.
- Select Default Color in the right pane and click Finish.
With the above procedure, you can cancel the dark mode of Chrome. If you’re back to the default color and Chrome is in dark mode, continue to try the following:
Method 2: Exit Dark Mode on Windows / Mac
Chrome goes into dark mode even if you have dark mode turned on in your Windows or Mac system settings.
So if you change your Chrome color and theme, but it’s still in dark mode, try changing your system color settings. To turn off dark mode on your system, follow the steps below.
For Windows:
- Right-click on Windows Mark and select Settings.
- Select Personalize in the left pane.
- Select “Color”.
- Click the Select Color select box and select Light.
- If you want to return to the traditional color scheme in Windows 10, select “Custom” and change the Windows mode to “Dark” and the default app mode to “Light”.
For Mac:
- Click the Apple icon in the upper left and select System Preferences.
- Click “General”.
- Switch the appearance mode to “light”.
With the above procedure, you can cancel Dark Mode in the system settings of Windows or Mac. After changing the settings, restart Chrome and make sure Dark Mode is turned off.
Method 3: Exit Google’s Dark Mode
If only Google’s search page is in dark mode, Google’s appearance settings may be in dark mode instead of Chrome.
Therefore, please check Google’s appearance settings and cancel it in dark mode. Follow the steps below to cancel Google’s Dark Mode.
- Start Chrome and “Google” access the top page of
- Click “Settings” at the bottom right.
- Click Dark Mode: On in the menu.
Alternatively, you can turn off dark mode from Google’s search settings by following the steps below.
- Select Settings> Search Settings.
- When the Search Settings opens, select Design in the left pane.
- Select “Device Default” or “Light Mode” in “Appearance” in the right pane.
- Click “Save”.
With the above procedure, you can cancel Google’s dark mode. After changing the settings, open Google’s search page in Chrome and make sure Dark Mode is turned off.
Method 4: Disable Auto Dark Mode for Test Features
The opened page will be in dark mode in some cases due to the auto dark mode enabled in Chrome’s test feature.
Therefore, check your Chrome test feature settings and disable Auto Dark Mode if enabled. To disable the test function Auto Dark Mode, follow the steps below.
- Start Chrome.
- Type Chrome: // flags in the address bar and press Enter.
- Type “Auto Dark Mode” in the search bar.
- If “Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents” is “Enabled”, change it to “Disabled”.
- Click “Relaunch” displayed in the lower right to restart.
With the above procedure, you can disable the auto dark mode of the test function. Once you’ve changed the settings, open the page in Chrome and make sure you’re no longer in dark mode.
Method 5: Disable Dark Mode Extensions
Dark Mode may be turned on by an extension installed in Chrome.
So, if you can’t get rid of Dark Mode by changing the normal settings, try disabling the extension that changes the appearance of Chrome. To disable Chrome extensions, follow the steps below.
- Start Chrome.
- Click “Menu (3-point icon)” in the upper right.
- Select “More Tools”-> “Extensions”.
- Toggle the switch at the bottom right of “Extensions that change the appearance of Chrome” to “Off”.
If you can disable the look-changing extension, restart Chrome and see if Dark Mode is turned off.
Method 6: Delete the linked parameter
For Windows, if a parameter is added to the Chrome shortcut link, it will be forced to boot in dark mode.
To remove the parameter of this shortcut link and exit Dark Mode, follow the steps below.
- Right-click on the Google Chrome shortcut icon and select Properties.
- Open the Shortcuts tab.
- If “–force-dark-mode” is included at the end of the link, delete it.
- Click OK to save your settings.
If you can remove the parameter in the Chrome shortcut link, restart Chrome and make sure Dark Mode is turned off.
Method 7: Reset Chrome settings
If you’ve tried the steps above and you still can’t get rid of Chrome’s Dark Mode, there may be something wrong with your Chrome settings.
Therefore, you may be able to cancel Dark Mode by resetting Chrome settings and returning to the initial state. However, remember that resetting the settings will require you to reconfigure your account, extensions, etc.
To reset Chrome settings, follow the steps below.
- Start “Chrome”.
- Click “Menu (3-point icon)” in the upper right and select “Settings”.
- Click Advanced in the left pane.
- If the item is not displayed, click the “3-line icon” on the upper left.
- Click Reset and Cleanup (or Reset Settings).
- Click “Restore settings to original defaults”.
- Click Reset Settings.
After resetting the settings, make sure Chrome is out of dark mode.
DISABLE DARK MODE IN GOOGLE CHROME ON SMARTPHONE
You can cancel the dark mode of the Chrome app on your Android smartphone or iPhone by the following method. However, please note that some settings cannot be changed for iPhone.
Method 1: Exit Dark Mode in Chrome
For Android devices, you can turn off dark mode from the Chrome app settings. Follow the steps below to cancel Dark Mode from the Chrome app settings.
- Launch the “Chrome” app.
- Tap “Menu (3-point icon)” in the upper right and select “Settings”.
- Tap “Theme”.
- Select “System Default” or “Light”.
- Note that if you select System Default, the device will switch to dark mode when it goes into battery saver mode.
With the above steps, you can cancel the dark mode of the Chrome app. Try the next method if you still can’t exit Dark Mode after changing the settings.
Method 2: Remove Dark Mode from Android / iOS
If Dark Mode is enabled in your Android or iOS settings, the Chrome app will launch in Dark Mode.
Therefore, you can also cancel the dark mode of the Chrome app by canceling the dark mode of Android or iOS. Follow the steps below to cancel the dark mode of Android / iOS.
- Open the “Settings” app.
- Select “Display (Screen Settings)”.
- Toggle the “Dark Theme (or Night Mode)” switch to “Off”.
For iOS (iPhone):
- Open the “Settings” app.
- Tap “Screen display and brightness”.
- Change the appearance mode to “light”.
- If you want to prevent switching to dark mode depending on the time of day, switch the “Auto” switch to “Off”.
Method 3: Remove from Google settings
If only Google pages opened with the Chrome app are in dark mode, please cancel dark mode in Google settings.
To turn off Google’s Dark Mode on your Android or iOS device, follow the steps below.
- Launch the “Chrome” app and access the top page of “Google” .
- Tap “Menu (3-line icon)” on the upper left.
- Tap Dark Mode: On.
- Alternatively, select Settings and then select Light Mode or Device Default in appearance. Scroll to the bottom and tap Save.
With the above procedure, you can cancel Google’s dark mode. If you can unlock it, reload the Google page and make sure Dark Mode is unlocked.
Method 4: Disable Auto Dark Mode for Test Features
You can enable Chrome’s testing feature, Auto Dark Mode, for Android devices, just like you would on a PC.
So, if you still can’t turn off Dark Mode in your Chrome app, make sure the test feature Auto Dark Mode is disabled.
Follow the steps below to cancel the dark mode of the Chrome app.
- Launch the “Chrome” app.
- Type “Chrome: // flags” in the address bar to navigate.
- Type “Auto Dark Mode” in the search box.
- If “Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents” is “Enabled”, change it to “Disabled”.
- Click “Relaunch” displayed in the lower right to restart.
You can disable the auto dark mode of Chrome’s test function with the above steps. After changing the settings, make sure the Chrome app is out of dark mode.
