How To Fix Game Keeps Minimizing Desktop Randomly in Windows 11/10

When playing a game in full screen on a Windows PC, the game may suddenly be minimized to the taskbar and returned to the desktop.

Even if the game is minimized, you can continue playing by reopening the game program in the taskbar, but it is very inconvenient if it is minimized many times. Also, depending on the game, the game may freeze and require a restart when minimized.

This article will explain in detail what to do when the full screen suddenly minimizes while playing PC games on Windows 10/11.

Method 1: Launch the game in borderless window mode

If you are running the game in full screen mode, the game screen will be automatically minimized when another application is activated.

To resolve the above issue , switch the game to borderless window (virtual full screen) mode and play. Borderless windows prevent the game screen from being minimized when another application is activated.

The procedure for switching to borderless window mode varies from game to game, so please refer to the manual or help page. Also, some games may not support borderless window mode.

If your game doesn’t support borderless window mode, you can also force it into a borderless window using a third-party tool such as “Borderless Gaming”.

However, depending on the game, borderless window mode may reduce resolution and performance. If you want to play in normal full screen mode, proceed to the next solution.

Method 2: Disable the startup of the resident application

It’s possible that a resident app running in the background minimizes the full-screen screen of your game.

Therefore, disabling the startup of the resident app may solve the problem. Follow the steps below to disable app startup.

  1. Right-click on “Windows Marks” and select “Apps and Features”.
  2. Click “Startup”.
  3. In the list of apps in the right pane, switch all apps to “Off”.

With the above procedure, the app will not start in the background when the PC starts. After changing the settings, restart your PC and then play the game to see if the game minimization issue has been resolved.

Method 3: Disable game mode

Windows has a game mode feature that prioritizes game behavior. Game mode is a useful feature that improves game performance, but it has been reported that this feature minimizes the full screen screen of the game.

Therefore, disabling the Windows game mode may solve the problem. Follow the steps below to disable the game mode.

  1. Right-click on “Windows Mark” and select “Settings”.
  2. Click “Game”.
  3. Click “Game Mode”.
  4. Toggle the game mode switch to “off”.

With the above procedure, you can disable the game mode. If you can disable the game mode, start the game in that state and see if the problem of being minimized has been resolved.

Method 4: Disable Windows notifications

It has also been reported that the full screen screen of some games is minimized due to system notifications in Windows.

Therefore, you may be able to avoid the problem of screen minimization by temporarily disabling Windows notifications while playing the game.

Windows notifications can be disabled in any of the following ways:

Method 1: Turn on centralized mode:

    1. Click the “Action Center (callout) icon” on the right side of the taskbar.
      • For Windows 11, click the “Internet Sound / Power Icon”.
    2. Click “Intensive Mode Panel” to switch it to “On”.

Method 2: Disable all notifications:

    1. Right-click on “Windows Mark” and select “Settings”.
    2. Click System → Notifications and Actions.
      • For Windows 11, click System.
    3. Toggle the Notification switch in the right pane to Off.

If you want to temporarily disable notifications, we recommend turning centralized mode on and off.

If you can disable Windows notifications, start the game in that state and check if the screen is no longer minimized while playing.

Method 5: Disable Windows Error Reporting Service

In some cases, the standard service, Windows Error Reporting Service, minimizes the full-screen screen of the game.

So try disabling this service and see if the problem goes away. If you disable the service, you will not be able to report when an error occurs in the app, but there is no problem with the operation of Windows.

To disable the Windows Error Reporting Service, follow the steps below.

  1. Right-click on Windows Mark and select Run.
  2. Type msconfig and click OK.
  3. Open the Services tab.
  4. Find “Windows Error Reporting Service” in the service list and uncheck it.
  5. Click Apply and then OK.
  6. Restart your PC for the settings to take effect.

If you can disable the service and restart your PC, start the game and see if the screen minimization issue has been resolved.

Method 6: Update the graphics driver

It is possible that the game’s full-screen screen is suddenly minimized due to an old graphics driver and a bug.

Therefore, updating the graphics driver to the latest version may resolve the issue. Follow the steps below to update the graphics driver.

  1. Right-click on Windows Mark and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the Display Adapter tree.
  3. Right-click on “Graphic Driver Name” and select “Uninstall Device”.
  4. When the confirmation dialog is displayed, click “Uninstall”.
  5. After uninstalling the driver, go to the graphics board manufacturer’s driver download page.
    reference:
  6. Search by the model number of the graphic board you are using and download the latest driver file.
    • If you cannot find the graphics driver, just restart your PC.
  7. Double-click the downloaded file to extract it, and then double-click the executable file in the folder.
  8. Follow the installation wizard to install the graphics driver.
    • For NVIDIA, select “Custom Install”-> “Clean Install” in the installation options.
  9. After the driver installation is complete, restart your PC.

After updating the graphics driver, play the game to see if the full screen screen is no longer minimized. If updating the graphics driver does not resolve the issue, proceed to the next solution.

Method 7: Change the priority of the game process to “High”

Increasing the priority of the game application process may solve the problem of minimizing the full screen screen.

You can change the priority of the game process from the task manager by following the steps below.

  1. Launch the game application.
  2. Press the “Ctrl + Shift + Esc” keys at the same time.
  3. When “Task Manager” starts, make sure that it is in the details view and click the “Details” tab.
    • For simple display, click “Details” at the bottom left to switch.
  4. Find “Game Processes” in the list of processes and right-click.
  5. Select Priority Settings → High.

If you can change the priority of the game process to “High”, just play the game and see if the screen is no longer minimized.

Method 8: Display the taskbar on all screens

Due to having multiple displays connected to your PC, the full screen screen of your game may be minimized.

You can work around this issue by changing the display settings on the taskbar. To change the display settings of the taskbar, follow the procedure below.

  1. Right-click on “Windows Mark” and select “Settings”.
  2. Click “Personalize”.
  3. Click “Taskbar”.
    • For Windows 11, click “Taskbar”-> “Taskbar Behavior”.
  4. Toggle the “Show taskbar on all displays” switch in the multi-display item to “On”.

After changing the display settings of the taskbar, start the game and check if the screen is no longer minimized.

Method 9: Execute in administrator / compatibility mode

In some cases, the game application’s full-screen screen may be minimized due to lack of permissions or compatibility issues.

Therefore, changing the settings of the game application and running it in administrator / compatibility mode may solve the problem. To change the settings of the game application, follow the procedure below.

  1. Right-click on the game’s Executable (or shortcut) and select Properties.
  2. Open the Compatibility tab.
  3. Check “Run this program in compatibility mode” in compatibility mode.
  4. Check “Run this program as an administrator” in the settings.
  5. Click Apply and then OK to save your settings.

If you can change the settings of the game application, start the game and see if the problem of screen minimization has been resolved.

Method 10: Fix the GPU to be used

If your PC has multiple graphics boards, the full-screen screen may be minimized due to the switching graphics boards used by the game app.

The above problem may be solved by fixing the graphic board used. Follow the procedure below to fix the graphic board to be used.

  1. Launch the “NVIDIA Control Panel”.
    • Note : If you are using an AMD graphics board, please set it in “AMD Radeon Software”.
  2. Click 3D Settings → Manage 3D Settings in the left pane.
  3. Open the Program Settings tab.
  4. Select “Game Application” in the “Select a program to customize” select box.
  5. In the Select preferred graphics processor for this program select box, select GPU name for games (non-integrated).
  6. Click Apply to save your settings.

With the above procedure, you can fix the GPU used by the game application. After changing the settings, restart the game and see if the minimization issue is resolved.

Method 11: Disable the Windows key

If entering the Windows key during the game minimizes the full screen screen, you can work around the problem by disabling the Windows key.

However, keep in mind that disabling the Windows key will prevent you from using the Windows key to display the Start menu and some Windows shortcut keys.

To disable the Windows key, you can disable it by entering the shortcut to disable the Windows key on your gaming keyboard. If you are unsure, check the manual etc. and disable it.

If your keyboard does not have the ability to disable the Windows key, you can do so by following the steps below.

  1. Right-click on Windows Mark and select Run.
  2. Type regedit and click OK.
  3. When the Registry Editor opens, access the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout
  4. Right-click in the blank area of the right pane and select New → Binary Value.
  5. Rename the created registry value to “Scancode Map”.
  6. Double-click “Scancode Map” to open it.
  7. Enter the following character string in “Value data”.
    00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
    03 00 00 00 00 00 5B E0
    00 00 5C E0 00 00 00 00
  8. Click OK.
  9. Restart your PC to reflect the registry.
    • If you want to restore the settings, delete the created “Scancode Map” and restart your PC

If you can disable the Windows key, start the game and see if pressing the Windows key does not minimize the game.

Method 12: Full scan with security software

It is quite possible that the full screen screen of the game will be minimized due to the fact that the PC is infected with malware and processing is occurring in the background.

Therefore, if the countermeasures so far do not solve the problem, we recommend that you perform a full scan of your PC with security software just in case.

To run a full scan with standard Windows security, follow these steps:

  1. Click “Windows Mark” and select “Settings”.
  2. Click Update & Security.
  3. Click Windows Security in the left pane.
  4. Click the “Open Windows Security” button.
  5. When Windows Security opens, click Virus and Wonder Prevention.
  6. Click Scan Options.
  7. Select “Full Scan” and click “Scan Now”.
  8. Wait for a while until the scan is complete. If a threat is discovered, it will be automatically quarantined.

If you can perform a full scan with your security software to detect and remove the malware, restart the game and see if the problem is resolved.

Method 13: Update Game / Windows

There may be cases where the full screen screen is automatically minimized due to a problem with the game application or Windows.

Therefore, make sure that your game application and Windows are up to date.

The method for updating the game application to the latest version differs depending on the game, so please refer to the help page etc.

To update Windows to the latest version, follow the steps below.

  1. Right-click on “Windows Mark” and select “Settings”.
  2. Click Update & Security → Windows Update.
    • For Windows 11, click Windows Update in the left pane.
  3. Click Check for Updates in the right pane.
  4. If new updates are found, they will be installed automatically.
    • If you see a “Restart” or “Download” button, click it to apply the update.
  5. After the installation is complete, make sure Windows is up to date.

Once you have the game and Windows up to date, try launching the game again to see if the screen minimization issue has been resolved.
