How To Fix Slack Notifications Not Working

Slack has grown rapidly in recent years, especially for group project work. To get the most out of this messaging tool, the notifications must work properly. If we don’t know when a message is received, it’s as if we didn’t receive it, and we may miss important or urgent information.

As Slack is mainly used in the workplace, messages or tasks are usually received with significant urgency through its channels and chats, as the rest of the group or project’s work will be needed. Based on this assumption, Slack notifications are essential for notifying us when we receive a message.

Many users don’t receive Slack notifications despite having them enabled. This can be a problem because we may not know about a task that requires our action because we didn’t receive the notification or read the message.

The multiple ways to customize notifications in Slack are often the reason why Slack notifications aren’t working as they should. Slack’s notifications sync across platforms. When you change a setting on one device, it changes on all others. Each group’s notification settings must be configured separately.

If you’re having problems receiving Slack notifications on Android, iPhone, or a Windows or MacOS desktop, this tutorial will show you how to fix them.

Restart Your Device

Turn off and then back on your computer or phone. Even though this action seems too obvious, it can actually fix problems with Slack notifications.

Check to see if the problem with the notifications is fixed once your device has restarted.

For Android

  • First, press and hold the device’s power button.
  • From there, you should see a menu with options to Power Off and Restart.
  • To reboot your phone, click Restart. Rather than Restart, click Power Off.

For iPhone

  • Locate the phone’s power button.
  • For iPhone 8 and older, press and hold the power button for several seconds. For iPhone X and newer, press it along with the volume up button.
  • Third, a slider will appear. Right-click to power off.
  • Then, turn on your iPhone after a minute.
  • Hold the power button until the Apple logo appears.

Use the Slack App Notification Troubleshooter

The best part is that the Slack mobile app has a built-in troubleshooter for notifications that can help you fix most problems with them. It can be used on both Android and iOS devices:

  • On your Android phone, open the Slack app.
  • Click on the You tab:
  • On the next screen, you’ll need to choose: Notifications > Troubleshoot notifications.
  • The app will start to check your device for problems with notifications and fix them automatically if it finds any.

The troubleshooter may tell you what caused a failure notification after troubleshooting. You can save time and effort by focusing on the highlighted settings.

Update your Slack App

Sometimes the issue is a newer Slack app version. You can update Slack from Google Play or the App Store. After updating the app, you can check if the notifications are working.

Configure Slack Notification Settings

If the problem with Slack notifications persists in the mobile app, then you may want to check if you have enabled in-app mobile notifications. Slack works slightly differently compared to other apps in terms of notifications.

By default, Slack sends you notifications only if you’re idle in the Slack desktop app. This means that you must have spent one minute with your computer’s lock screen or 10 minutes with no activity. Simply, you will receive notifications from Slack on your mobile whenever you are active on the desktop app. Fortunately, you can change this default setting by following the steps below:

  • Go to Settings.
  • In the Apps list, go to Slack.
  • This will display the OS specific settings regarding Slack.
  • Access the setting: Notifications.
  • Allow Notifications, Sounds, and Badges are enabled.

Make sure that all the options are activated so that you can receive notifications from Slack without any problem.

Allow Mobile Notifications

If the issue with Slack notifications persists in the mobile app, you should check to see if in-app mobile notifications have been enabled. In terms of notifications, Slack differs slightly from other apps.

Slack sends notifications by default only when you are idle in the Slack desktop app. This means you must have spent one minute on your computer’s lock screen or ten minutes without doing anything. Simply put, you will receive Slack notifications on your mobile device whenever you are active on the desktop app. Fortunately, you can change this default setting by performing the following steps:

  • Open Slack for mobile.
  • Go to the tab: You.
  • On the next screen you will have to select the option: Notifications.
  • Of the options offered you will have to click on: Notify me on the mobile.
  • You will be directed to another screen where you will have to select the option: Always even when I am available.

From this point on, the Slack notifications on your mobile phone should be restored and working properly.

Enable Sound Notification

Normally, when you receive a notification on your phone, you expect it to make a sound to alert you that you have received a message via Slack. You can also change or check the sound for Slack notifications.

The absence of sound in your Slack notifications could also be due to your device’s sound being turned off. As a result, you should double-check that the sound on your phone and computer is completely turned off.

Enable Slack Thread Notifications

If you have problems receiving notifications from conversations or chats, you should check if the dedicated setting is active or not.

  • Open Slack
  • Go to the section: You
  • Select the option: Notifications
  • Here, enable the option: Replies to threads.

Turn off Battery Saver Mode

Check to see if the mode that saves battery life is turned on for your mobile or desktop device. Some apps and programmes, like Slack, can’t send you notifications when they want to when these battery-saving modes are on.

Turn off your device’s battery saver mode and see if you now get Slack notifications.

  • On an Android phone, go to Settings > Battery to do this.
  • Turn off the Battery Saver and Adaptive battery modes.

  • Go to Setting > Battery on your iPhone.
  • Turn off the toggle next to Low power mode.

Disable Slack App Battery Optimization

Newer Android devices have Battery Optimization for specific apps. This feature lets Android users choose which apps can run in the background. If you accidentally enable this Slack feature, notifications won’t work.

Long-press the Slack app icon and tap App info to disable Battery optimization.

  • Tap Battery.
  • Tap on Battery optimization.
  • Search for Slack app and open it.
  • Click Don’t optimize and save.

Reset Slack App Cache Data

You can also try clearing the cache data of the app. Very often, corrupted temporary files are the reason behind malfunctioning of apps and their notifications. You can clear the cache data of the Slack app and check if the notifications are restored.

You can clear the Slack app’s cache by going to the You tab, then Preferences, then Advanced, and then Reset Cache.

Re-install Slack

If nothing else has worked, try deleting the Slack app and reinstalling it. It usually solves problems with Slack notifications as well.
