How To Prevent Windows 11 Update From Installing On Windows 10

Microsoft has released Windows 11, and PCs using Windows 10 will see a prompt to upgrade to Windows 11 at startup.

However, bugs are often found in new operating systems, and many users will want to use Windows 10 for a while without upgrading to Windows 11.

This article will explain How To Prevent Windows 11 Update From Installing On Windows 10.

Method 1: Cancel the Windows 11 upgrade

Even if the Windows 11 upgrade notification is displayed when you start your PC, you can cancel the upgrade on the guidance screen.

To cancel your Windows 11 upgrade, click “Reject upgrade” on the “Windows 11 is recommended for your device” screen. After that, click “Do nothing now” on the “Are you wondering whether to move to Windows 11? Screen.

By cancelling the upgrade by the above operation, Windows 10 will not be upgraded to Windows 11 without permission.

However, even if you cancel the upgrade, the Windows 11 upgrade will be displayed every time you start your PC. Try the following workarounds if you don’t want to see the Windows 11 upgrade notification every time.

Method 2: Disable Windows 11 upgrade notifications

You can disable the Windows 11 upgrade notification when you start your PC by changing the Windows Update settings.

You can only disable Windows 11 upgrade notifications while Windows 10 updates are available.

To disable Windows 11 upgrade notifications, follow the steps below.

  1. Right-click on “Windows Mark” and select “Settings“.
  2. When the Windows settings open, click Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update in the left pane.
  4. Click “Stay on Windows 10 for now” in the right pane.

With the above procedure, you can disable the upgrade notification of Windows 11. Restart your PC and check that the Windows 11 upgrade notification is no longer displayed.

If you want to return to the setting to display the upgrade notification of Windows 11 again, click “Check if installation is ready”, which is added to the same setting screen after disabling.

Method 3: Pause Windows Update updates

Windows 11 upgrade notifications can be temporarily stopped by changing the update settings of Windows Update.

However, even if you stop the Windows 11 upgrade notification in this way, the upgrade notification will be displayed again after a certain period.

Therefore, please note that you need to pause again each time you see a Windows 11 notification. Also, please note that you will not be able to get Windows 10 updates while Windows Update is stopped.

To pause the update of Windows Update, follow the procedure below.

  1. Right-click on “Windows Mark” and select “Settings“.
  2. When the Windows settings open, click Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update in the left pane.
  4. Click Pause Updates for 7 days in the right pane.

If you want to specify the suspension period arbitrarily, click “Advanced Options” and select the date to stop in “Select Date” of “Pause Updates”.

With the above procedure, you can temporarily stop the upgrade notification of Windows 11.

If you want to stop Windows 11 upgrade notifications permanently rather than temporarily, try the following:

Method 4: Disable the Windows Update service

You can also stop the Windows 11 upgrade by disabling the Windows Update service.

However, keep in mind that if you stop the Windows Update service, you will not be able to get updates for Windows 10.

If you want to restore the settings of the Windows Update service, change the “Startup type” to “Automatic“.

Method 5: Change Group Policy settings

If you are using Windows 10 Pro edition or above, you can change the settings in Group Policy to stop the Windows 11 upgrade.

Please note that this method is not available for Windows 10 Home editions where you cannot change the Group Policy settings. For the Home edition, try another method.

  1. Right-click on Windows Mark and select Run.
  2. Enter gpedit.msc as the name and click OK.
  3. After Group Policy is launched, expand the tree in the left pane in the following order:

After changing the Group Policy settings and restarting your PC, ensure that the Windows 11 upgrade notification no longer appears.

Method 6: Modify the registry to disable the upgrade

Windows 11 upgrades can be completely disabled by modifying the registry. However, it is recommended that you make a backup before doing so, as incorrect registry changes can cause problems with Windows operation.

To modify the registry to disable the Windows 11 upgrade, follow these steps:

Right-click on Windows Mark and select Run. Enter “regedit” as the name and click “OK“.

When the Registry Editor starts, expand the tree in the left pane to access the following keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows

Right-click the Windows key and select Export to save a backup of the registry.

Expand the Windows key and select the Windows Update key.

If the “Windows Update” key does not exist, right-click the “Windows” key and select “New” >> “Key” to create a “Windows Update” key.

Right-click on the Windows Update key and select New >> DWORD (32-bit) Value. Rename the value created in the right pane to “Target Release Version“.

Double-click “Target Release Version” to open it, change the value data to “1” and click “OK“.

Right-click on the “Windows Update” key and select “New” >> “String Value“. Rename the value created in the right pane to “Target Release Version Info“.

Double-click “TargetReleaseVersionInfo” to open it, enter “Current Windows 10 version number (such as 21H2)” in the value data, and click “OK“.

You can check the current version number of Windows 10 by selecting “Windows Mark” >> “Settings” >> “System” >> “Detailed Information” >> “Windows Specifications” >> “Version“.

Restart your PC to reflect the registry.
