This is a 24.5 inch 1080p IPS monitor with a huge 240 Hertz refresh rate making this the first super-high refresh IPS display many of us haven’t experienced since 240 Hertz monitors, hit the market a few years back. Most models have had to stick to TN panels as other LCD technology simply hasn’t been fast enough to properly hit such a high refresh rate. But in the last six months or so new generations of IPS and VA technology have become available unlocking 240 Hertz for the first time and yes 240 Hertz VA monitors are a thing as well.
As we said the MSI MAG251RX packs a 240 Hertz IPS panel it is a 1080p panel although 1440p and 240 hertz IPS panels aren’t too far away either. But given its smaller 24-inch size this sort of resolution is fine. Other features include one more second greater great response times we’ll see about that + adaptive sync and display HDR 400 support. What will be interesting to see is where the 240 Hertz is possible on an IPS monitor has this technology improved. Its performance to an acceptable level or is it still a fair way off 240 Hertz because if it can deliver on performance the MSI MAG251RX is the price tag of just 360 US dollars is pretty attractive when you look over the 240 Hertz monitor market.

Let’s dive right in MSI keeps things simple here with just three overdrive modes the first one being normal which shows a 6 millisecond,240 Hertz with no overshoot, this isn’t quick enough for 240-hertz gaming. But considering this looks like overdrive disabled to us it’s a pretty promising start the fast mode brings things up a notch to a 5.30-millisecond generate great average. Again with no appreciable overshoot, however, a 240 refresh rate means the image is changing on the screen every 4.17 millisecond so five milliseconds exceeds this refresh window this causes smearing, and refresh rate compliance of just 50% shows.
This overdrive mode also isn’t quite fast enough to keep up with 240 Hertz the good news is the faster mode is decent pushing. This IPS panel to its limits with a 3.21 millisecond greater average there is some overshoot introduced particularly for close together transition some as high as 30%. So that’s not too bad in gaming we occasionally spotted some light trails behind moving objects from this overshoot. But we also found the faster mode was clearer than the fast mode so it’s a minor trade-off and it’s not too noticeable so we don’t think it will concern many gamers. And with this faster mode, you can get excellent 240 Hertz compliance of a hundred per cent which is a surprise to you given we didn’t think this sort of IPS panel would be quick enough but it is a 3.21-millisecond average is TN like performance and comfortably good enough for a true 240 Hertz experience.
This new generation of VA panels from AO Optronics is up to the task of these higher refresh requirements. There are some downsides however the faster overdrive mode isn’t suitable for adaptive scent gaming as performance quickly drops away at 144 Hertz. With a significant increase to overshoot light trails behind moving objects now quite obvious, we don’t think this mode is usable at this refresh rate.

It comes with a single DisplayPort 1.2 and 2 HDMI 2.0 ports plus USB C which uses DisplayPort alt mode as its connection on top of that, there’s a USB hub and an audio output Jack. There is a USB C is an interesting choice normally we see this more on professional monitors but as it becomes more widespread it’s good to have it on a monitor to the on-screen display.

Talk about the power options MSI MAG251RX gets a 19V3.42A external type of power adapter. And in terms of power consumption, it consumes 36W which is fair for this size of gaming monitor which has this type of refresh rate and RGB lights.
The IPS panel of the MSI MAG251RX display will give you both an outstanding pixel response time execution and superb colors. Therefore, if you’ve been considering a monitor that you can manage during both work and also for gaming, you should definitely consider the MSI MAG251RX it turns to be a superb investment for you at this price point.
