Honor, and of course the parent company Huawei, have already launched many powerful wearables this year with the Honor Watch Magic 2, the Huawei Watch GT 2e, the Huawei Watch Fit, and the Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro. Now the Honor Watch GS Pro is the first outdoor smartwatch from Huawei / Honor. How the Watch GS Pro fares, especially in comparison to the Amazfit T-Rex as a direct competitor, will be found in this comparison.

Amazfit T-Rex
The Amazfit T-Rex also relies on a round watch design, although the special shape immediately catches the eye. At first glance, the T-Rex somehow reminds me of different Casio G-Shock models. So you get a more “ masculine” basic shape with larger screws around the bezel and slight elevations on the edge of the case to protect the buttons on the side. There are even 4 of them with the T-Rex, which is a novelty in the smartwatches from Amazfit.
The buttons are quite practical for an outdoor smartwatch, for example, if you consider using the watch with gloves – but more on that later. With dimensions of 47.7 mm in diameter and 13.5 mm in height, the T-Rex is definitely one of the larger smartwatches without being totally uncomfortable on the arm. In my opinion, the T-Rex bracelet is one of the main contributors to this. The silicone bracelet is a proud 26 mm wide and a total of approx. 19.5 cm long.
It is held securely on the wrist by a classic pin buckle. The material is really pleasantly soft and, at the same time, very flexible.
In addition to the black “Rock Black” model, there are four other color variants: Gun Gray, Camo Green, Khaki, and Army Green. This means that the classic outdoor colors are completely covered.
Huami has been installing stunning AMOLED displays in the Amazfit series for a long time. The T-Rex also has a 1.3-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels. The display is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and also has an anti-fingerprint coating. The color reproduction is really very good, and the brightness is also convincing. Even in direct sunlight, the white writing is always easy to read. The brightness can also be continuously adjusted manually using a slider.
Honor Watch GS Pro
When you first look at the new Honor Watch GS Pro, it becomes clear that this is a real outdoor smartwatch. Therefore, the watch should be a clear challenge to the Amazfit T-Rex, with which Huami has penetrated the outdoor area for the first time this year. The Watch GS Pro also basically follows a round watch design and, as an outdoor smartwatch, has a rough, masculine look. The watch also has a very stylish element with an attached stainless steel bezel that is still slightly profiled on the outer edge. The housing is made entirely of plastic and, in addition to the round basic shape, always has angular elements.
There are two buttons on the right side of the case. While the top is kept in the respective version colors, the bottom always comes in matt black. The speaker and microphone are located directly at the transition between the top and bottom. Furthermore, you will also find the obligatory charging pins and the optical pulse sensor on the underside. The bracelet mounts also connect directly to the case body in an angular design. However, they are designed to use normal bracelets with a width of 22 mm on the Watch GS Pro.
The built-in bracelets are approx. 9.5 cm and 12.5 cm long and have a width of 22 mm. The bracelet is securely closed with a classic pin buckle. This is also made of stainless steel. With dimensions of 48mm (L) x 48mm (W) x 13.6mm (H), the watch weighs 79 grams and is almost 20 grams above the Amazfit T-Rex. The Honor Watch GS Pro is available in three different versions. The outer design and the angular, masculine look come into their own in this version.
The Honor Watch GS Pro is definitely on par with the Amazfit T-Rex in terms of materials and craft. The somewhat unsightly constructed ends of the bracelet holder annoy me a little, however, and thus the point in terms of wearing comfort clearly goes to the Amazfit T-Rex.
When it comes to the display, you can, of course, fall back on tried and tested methods. Therefore, the 1.39 ″ AMOLED color display with a resolution of 454 x 454 pixels and a pixel density of 326 PPI is used here. With this model, the stunning color rendering and the level of detail of the display are convincing.
The brightness can be regulated in five stages, and an auto mode for the brightness is also offered via the ambient light sensor. An always-on display is available again – but it ensures significantly shorter battery life.

But what makes the Amazfit T-Rex so special. The T-Rex should be an “outdoor smartwatch,” And the design definitely contributes to it.
A kind of unique selling point is certainly the military certification of the Amazfit T-Rex. More precisely, there are even 12 certifications according to the US military standard MIL-STD-810. For example, the T-Rex has a heat resistance of up to 70 ° C, a cold resistance of -40 ° C, a 240 h moisture resistance, and corrosion protection of 96 h. That sounds quite impressive at first, of course, and makes perfect sense for an “outdoor smartwatch,” but whether these are the must-have features for a smartwatch remains questionable. All direct competing models also have real outdoor features such as a flashlight or the compass. In my opinion, the GPS / GLONASS would only be a real outdoor feature if it could use in conjunction with maps on the watch, but unfortunately, this is not the case. So I miss real (and above all new) outdoor features, although I’m not at all sure what an “outdoor smartwatch” should be able to do.
The battery of the Amazfit T-Rex has a capacity of 390 mAh and, according to the manufacturer, should provide a battery life of up to 20 days.
Honor Watch GS Pro
When it comes to the Honor Guard GS Pro equipment, the first thing you notice is the 14 certifications according to the military standard MIL-STD-810G. Accordingly, the watch was tested for negative pressure (altitude), heat, cold, temperature shock, contamination by liquids, solar radiation (sunshine), rain, humidity, salt fog, sand and dust, immersion, vibration, shock, temperature, humidity, and altitude and received the corresponding Certificates. This model can withstand the heat of up to 70 ° C, cold down to -40 ° C, 96 hours in salt fog, or 240 hours in moisture. Of course, the manufacturer of such an outdoor smartwatch advertises that this device can be used to plunge into exciting adventures in nature – “Dare to Explore”!

Amazfit T-Rex
Since the Amazfit T-Rex is even listed as a sports watch on the Amazfit homepage, in addition to running, the T-Rex can also record 12 other sports. These include walking, outdoor biking, pool swimming, open water swimming, treadmill training, spinning, cross-trainer, exercise (gymnastics/fitness), climbing, cross-country skiing, skiing, and outdoor trekking.
In outdoor sports, you can also track your own position using GPS & GLONASS. Operating the watch during a sports session is simple and, of course, uses the existing buttons so that you don’t have to tap on the touchscreen during training. You can also add training goals, sports reminders, or real-time diagrams to be configured. Strangely, the screen always remains active during tracking and only darkens slightly. The brightness is not strong enough to read anything from the watch in this mode (and only in light sunshine). Nevertheless, it unnecessarily reduces the battery life at the same time.
Honor Watch GS Pro
This app includes activating SMS and app notifications and configuring health tracking (24 hour HR, steps, sleep, stress, etc.). As usual, the notifications from the smartphone are very reliable. Direct replies to WhatsApp messages, for example, and the display of emojis & pictures, are still reserved for smartwatches with Wear OS such as the Oppo Watch. Calls can be accepted directly on the watch and made using the microphone and loudspeaker. All you need is an active Bluetooth connection to the smartphone.
In terms of the operating system and smartphone app, the wearables from Huawei / Honor have, in my opinion, been somewhat superior to those from Huami since this year at the latest. The Amazfit T-Rex has to admit defeat to the new Honor Watch GS Pro on this point.
