Chrome Not Saving Passwords: 9 Best Ways To Fix

Google Chrome has a function to memorize the password entered in the form, such as the login screen and automatically enter it the next time.

Normally, when you enter the password for the first time, it will be automatically entered just by saving the password. Still, there are cases where the password is not automatically entered even if you save it. In addition, there are cases where it is not automatically entered on devices using the same Google account.

This article will explain what to do when the password cannot be automatically entered in the PC version of Chrome. The action is assumed to be Windows and Mac.

Step 1: Enable the autofill setting

It is possible that the password etc. is not automatically entered because the automatic input setting of Chrome is disabled.

Therefore, please check your Chrome settings and change it to enabled if autofill is disabled. To enable Chrome autofill settings, follow the steps below.

  1. Start “Google Chrome”.
  2. Click “Menu (3-point icon)” in the upper right and select “Settings”.
  3. Select Autofill from the left pane.
    • If the item is not displayed, click the “3-line icon” on the upper left.
  4. Click Password in the right pane.
  5. Change the switches for “Allow passwords to be saved” and “Auto login” to “On”.

With the above settings, the password saved in Chrome will be automatically entered. If you can change the settings, save the login password and check if it is automatically entered.

Step 2: Update Chrome to the latest version

It is possible that the saved password is not automatically entered because the version of Chrome is old and there is a problem.

Try updating Chrome to the latest version as Chrome bugs will be fixed with new updates. To update Chrome to the latest version, follow the steps below.

  1. Start “Google Chrome”.
  2. Click “Menu (3-point icon)” in the upper right.
  3. Click Help → About Google Chrome.
  4. Checking for updates will start automatically. If you find any updates, please perform the installation.

Once you’ve updated Chrome to the latest version, make sure your password is auto-filled. If “Chrome is up to date” is displayed, it means that the version is already the latest version, so proceed to the next solution.

Step 3: Enable password synchronization

It is possible that the password that should have been saved on another device is not automatically entered because Chrome password synchronization is disabled.

So check your Chrome password sync settings and try enabling them if they are disabled. To enable password synchronization, follow these steps:

  1. Start “Google Chrome”.
  2. Click “Menu (3-point icon)” in the upper right and select “Settings”.
  3. Select “Google Settings” in the left pane.
    • If the item is not displayed, click the “3-line icon” on the upper left.
  4. Click Sync & Google Services from the right pane.
  5. Click Manage what to sync.
  6. Make sure you have selected “Synchronize everything”.
    • If you have customized synchronization, make sure the Password switch is on.

With the above settings, passwords will be synchronized between devices that use the same Google account. After enabling synchronization, open the login screen again and check if the password is automatically entered.

Step 4: Disable all extensions

It is possible that the password is not automatically entered due to the extension installed in Chrome.

Therefore, if you have the extension installed, please check if the problem is solved with all the functions disabled.

To disable all Chrome extensions, follow the steps below.

  1. Start “Chrome”.
  2. Click “Menu (3-point icon)” in the upper right.
  3. Select “More Tools”-> “Extensions”.
  4. The installed extensions will be displayed, so turn the switch at the bottom right of all extensions to “Off”.

With the above procedure, you can disable all Chrome extensions. If you can disable the extension, restart Chrome and see if the password is auto-filled.

If autofill works fine with extensions disabled, you can determine that one of the extensions is the cause.

Therefore, turn the extensions back on one by one to identify the offending feature. If you find the feature in question, turn it off or uninstall it.

Step 5: Clear Chrome’s temporary data

There may be a case where the automatic password entry does not work properly due to a problem with Chrome’s cache data or site data.

Therefore, clearing Chrome’s temporary data once may solve the problem. To delete temporary data in Chrome, follow the steps below.

  1. Start “Chrome”.
  2. Click “Menu (3-point icon)”-> “Other Tools”-> “Clear Browsing History” in the upper right.
  3. Open the Advanced tab.
  4. Change the period to “All period” and check “Browsing history”, “Cookies and other site data”, and “Cached images and files”.
  5. Click Delete Data.

With the above procedure, you can delete the temporary data of Chrome. After the removal is complete, restart Chrome and see if the password can be auto-filled.

Step 6: Cancel the option not to save

There may be cases where Chrome’s autofill doesn’t work because the autofill site is registered as a site that doesn’t store passwords.

Therefore, please check the sites that do not save the password, and cancel the registration if it is registered. To remove the option to not save your site password, follow these steps:

  1. Start “Google Chrome”.
  2. Click “Menu (3-point icon)” in the upper right and select “Settings”.
  3. Select Autofill from the left pane.
    • If the item is not displayed, click the “3-line icon” on the upper left.
  4. Click Password in the right pane.
  5. If there is a “URL of a site that is not automatically entered” in the “Do not always save” list, click the “x icon” to cancel it.

If you can remove the option to not save the site password, save the password and then check if it is automatically entered.

Step 7: Reset the user profile

There may be a case where the password is not automatically entered due to the corrupted Chrome user profile.

So try resetting your user profile to see if the problem goes away. To reset your Chrome user profile, follow these steps:

  • For Windows:
    1. If you have “Chrome” running, close it completely.
    2. Start Explorer and enter the following path in the address bar to move.
      %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome
    3. Right-click on the User Data folder and click Delete.
  • For Mac:
    1. If you have “Chrome” running, close it completely.
    2. Start Finder and select “Move”-> “Move to Folder” from the top menu.
    3. Enter the following path and click “Move”.
      ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/
    4. Right-click on the “Default” folder and select “Move to Trash”.

If you can reset your user profile by following the above steps, start Chrome and set up your Google account. After setting up your account, make sure your password is automatically entered.

Step 8: Reset Chrome settings

If you’ve tried the solutions above and Chrome doesn’t auto-fill your password properly, consider resetting Chrome.

Doing this will restore all Chrome settings to their initial state. To reset your Chrome settings, follow the steps below.

  1. Start “Chrome”.
  2. Click “Menu (3-point icon)” in the upper right and select “Settings”.
  3. Click Advanced in the left pane.
    • If the item is not displayed, click the “3-line icon” on the upper left.
  4. Click Reset and Cleanup (or Reset Settings).
  5. Click “Restore settings to original defaults”.
  6. Click Reset Settings.

After resetting the Chrome settings, start Chrome and perform the initial settings such as the account. Once you’ve set it up, make sure that automatic password entry works.

Step 9: Use password extension

Chrome offers several third-party extensions that manage and auto-fill passwords.

Reference: LastPass: Free Password Manager-Chrome Web Store

So if standard password autofill doesn’t work, you can use a third-party extension like the one above instead.

To use the extension, install the feature from the Chrome Web Store and configure the required settings. Please refer to the help page etc. as the method of using the function differs depending on the extension function.
