Telegram text formatting options
If you do not apply any formatting to message texts, then Telegram displays them in regular style. There are five different font styles for Telegram: bold, italic, strikethrough, underline, and monospace. Also, you can add a link if you want to. You can’t change the font, but you can change how it looks.
You can apply different styles both from a mobile phone and through a computer. Depending on which device you are using Telegram, you can use one of the existing methods to change the text:
Format text through the font editing menu. This option is available on both desktop and mobile devices. You need to type the text and highlight its fragment to apply the formatting. The pop-up menu has several font options and a button for pinning a link to labels.
Format text via context menu. You can also go this way on any gadget.
- Select the text you want to add formatting to.
- Right click.
- In the opened menu select Formatting.
Format font using hotkeys. For the desktop, text management through hotkey combinations is considered the most convenient. You probably already know them, as standard combinations are used. In this case, you do not need to access the pop-up menu. The difference in commands is only for certain operating systems: on Windows, use the “Ctrl” key, and on MacOS, press the “Cmd” key instead.
- Bold – Ctrl (Cmd) + B
- Underlined Text – Ctrl (Cmd) + U
- Text in italics – Ctrl (Cmd) + I
- Monospace font – Ctrl (Cmd) + Shift + M
- Strikethrough text – Ctrl (Cmd) + Shift + X
- Create a hyperlink – Ctrl (Cmd) + K
Format a word using characters. Another option is to frame the word or phrase on both sides with special characters that will transform what is written and you will get monospaced text, bold or italic:
- To make a phrase italic, use a double underscore on both sides __text__ → text
- For bold letters, type two asterisks on each side of the word or sentence **text** → text

Monospace will be obtained thanks to triple apostrophes on both sides of the phrase “`text’`→ text
How to Strikethrough Text on Android
You can cross out not only a fragment of the message, but the entire publication. There are no restrictions on the number of characters. To do this, enter the desired chat, type the text, but do not send it before formatting.
- With a long tap, point to the word that you want to strikethrough. If you need a phrase, drag the selection edges.
- If you need almost the entire message, then select the “Select All” command and adjust the borders if necessary.
- Click on the three dots at the top of the screen.
- Select Strikethrough from the pop-up menu.
How to Strikethrough Text on iPhone
Now let’s talk about how to write strikethrough in Telegram on iPhone.
- In the chat, type a message, then highlight the fragment that you want to cross out.
- A line with an additional menu will appear above the selection. There will be an arrow at the right end of the line – click on it to see the hidden section.
- Click BIU in the opened context menu
- Select the Strikethrough font to make text stand out.
